MIDDLE SCHOOL CLUBS & ACTIVITIES

All clubs meet on days when late buses are available
(Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday)
Mr. Darryl Rodewald (drodewald@tivertonschools.org) is the late-bus supervisor.

GARDEN CLUB: The courtyard in the middle of the school is central to TMS' new Garden Club. At TMS, students learn about ecosystems. This allows our students to have a deeper understanding of concepts and apply their knowledge to real hands-on experiences. In regards to the garden, there are many benefits. The school garden can be: a source of food for improving children’s diets and nutrition sources; a source of healthy influences -- physical activity, ingredients for school meals; an area of learning -- about nature, agriculture, nutrition, math, and other subjects; a place of pleasure and recreation -- flowers and shrubs, play areas, shade, eating areas; a continuing lesson in respecting the environment and taking pride in one’s school; a gathering spot for our community to socialize. Join in the fun!

GSA: TMS’ Gender Self Awareness group will meet every Thursday. Meetings will be held in Room 135 (Christina Hallman's room). This group is for any 7th and 8th graders who need personal support around gender issues -- or who wish to support their friends, siblings or other family members. GSA will provide a safe and open space for kids to talk about any and all sensitive issues. For any additional information, please contact Christina Hallman (challman@tivertonschools.org).

CHESS/CHECKERS LUNCH GROUP: Mrs. Margie Brennan runs this interactive alternative to the traditional lunch spent in the cafeteria. Students can challenge their peers to a game of chess or checkers during their assigned lunch time -- allowing for them to enjoy their afternoon meal and keep those neurons firing! Checkmate!

CYBERPATRIOT TEAM

TMS students in grades 6-8 are invited to participate in the US CyberPatriot program. CyberPatriot is the Air Force Association’s Nation Youth Cyber Education Program, created to motivate students toward careers in cybersecurity and other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. The program features the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition for high school and middle school students. Competitions are scheduled by the national organization, and take place at school on selected weekdays during regular school hours.

Practice sessions for the competitions also take place at TMS. Practice sessions will be on weeknights (likely one night per week or every other week for 90 minutes), subject to the availability of the volunteer technical mentors. These technical mentors are local IT professionals who volunteer their time to work with CyberPatriot teams. We are hoping to start holding practice sessions in late September. The practice sessions will probably wrap up in February. Students MUST attend the preparation sessions in order to be able to participate in the competitions.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or if your child is interested in participating. We must hear from interested students by September 19th in order to form teams and complete the registration process before the deadline. We have a limited number of spaces available for new 6th & 7th grade participants. Our emails are listed below along with a few links containing more information.
