Mrs. Craven, Tiverton Middle School Principal

Greetings From the TMS Family!
We have exciting news to share! Our Parent Advisory Committee, Guidance Department, Coordinators, and faculty have worked to develop a new schedule and course offerings for students at Tiverton Middle school. We are firm in our belief that these changes will further our school mission which was crafted by parents, teachers, and administrators: Tiverton Middle School strives to be a safe, inclusive environment that cultivates 21st century learning. We will work to improve critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity while fostering the unique talents and abilities of our diverse population of students.

First, since we recognize that instruction time is invaluable, a decision has been made to eliminate morning and afternoon homeroom for the 2019-2020 school year. The official school hours for students will remain 8:05am-2:35pm, but when students arrive at school, they will report to their first period class where attendance is taken. Still, all students at the middle school will be assigned a “homeroom” teacher, but this designation is for locker assignment, safety drills, assemblies, and organization. At 8:00am, every day, the first bell will ring and at this time, students will be able to go to their designated lockers to put away their personal belongings.

Next, World Language has been added to the schedules of grade 5 students and Academic Portuguese and Spanish is now available to all students.

Also, while we made the decision to eliminate the Extended Curriculum classes for English Language Arts, we have replaced these classes with the adoption of a rigorous, high quality curriculum, Wit and Wisdom, which will be taught in all English Language Arts classes, 5-8.

Our math department will continue to differentiate practice to enrich students in grade 5 and 6 and Extended Curriculum Math will be offered for students who qualify in grades 7 and 8.

To recognize students who exhibit leadership, character, community and academic achievements, Tiverton Middle School is instituting a long-awaited chapter of the National Junior Honor Society too.

To add, all students have the following courses added to their schedules:
 English Language Arts
Grade 5 - Writers Workshop: Growth Mindset
Grade 6 - Once Upon a Time: A Fairy Tale Study
Grade 7 - Media Literacy: How Media Affects Our Perceptions
Grade 8 - Public Speaking and Debate
Math
Grade 5 - Khan Academy
Grade 6 - Fun with Geometry
Grade 7 - Probability and Statistics Exploration
Grade 8 - Math Data Displays -charts, graphs, tables.
Further, our Technology and Computer classes are now renamed STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) so students in grades 5-8 will be enriched with curriculum developed by Project Lead the Way (PLTW), Computer Science (CODE.org), PRIME Robotics, and Common Sense Media (Digital Citizenship).

As a highlight, during lunch, all students, grades 5-8, will have the opportunity to participate in Lunch Laps. By offering students an opportunity to go outside the last ten minutes of lunch, we are promoting health and wellness which we all know will enrich our students’ social emotional well being.
Performance Ensembles will continue to be offered to students in grades 5-8 during our SOAR block (Student Opportunities for Advancement and Remediation).

Our Middle School will also be adopting Core Values. Known as “T.I.G.E.R.S’ Style”. Our core values reflect a universal code of ethics along with character traits necessary for student academic success and positive social-emotional growth. The values form the word “TIGERS” and represent the following acronym:
T = TEAMWORK Students work effectively with peers and educators.
I = INTEGRITY Having integrity means doing the right thing at all times.
G = GRIT Gritty students work towards their goals no matter what.
E = EMPATHY The ability to understand and share another's feelings.
R = RESPECT Shows respect for self and others.
S = SAFETY Works to keep self and others safe at all times.

Clearly, we have a lot to look forward to this year!
